Migratory birds galore (1) – Ovenbird

Every bird migration on the island is one filled with expectations; what species will be seen this year and where. And this year is no exception. Local birders are getting better and better in searching the interesting locations as well as in finding the smallest of birds. And photographing them of course.

One of the top birders, Rob Wellens, did it again when he discovered a rare and very elusive warbler species on Klein Curaçao during a visit to the uninhabited island at the end of September. Now, we know that Klein Curaçao is a surprising place, not only in beauty and as a recreational spot, but especially as a conservation area for sea turtles looking for sandy beaches to nest, breeding sea and shore birds and also as a stop over for migratory birds. Every year, different ‘new’ species are included on the ever growing bird species list of Klein Curaçao.

Ovenbird
It is not the first time the elusive Ovenbird is spotted on Klein Curaçao, but it has been many years since it was last seen on the island. Ovenbirds belong to the warbler family and are very well camouflaged with their olive green coloration and spots. Their menu consists of insects which they search for on the ground in forest areas.
They are named Ovenbird because of the shape of their nests.

English: Overbird
Dutch: Ovenvogel
