Over the past three months, several local birdwatchers have been working on the International Shorebird Survey (ISS) in Curaçao. This survey is one of the oldest and longest-running bird studies in the world, taking place for over 100 years. Commissioned by “Manomet,” the ISS was conducted in Curaçao for the first time this year. Manomet is an American research organization that maps bird migration routes in the Western Hemisphere. By mapping routes and wintering areas, birds can be better protected during this vulnerable period.
Due to its location, Curaçao is a perfect place for many shorebirds as wintering ground or to refuel before continuing their journey further south. By gaining a better understanding of bird species, numbers, and areas, these birds can hopefully be better protected in the future, thereby increasing the survival chances of many bird species.
The past three months were very successful and provided a good picture of shorebird migration on Curaçao. Want to know more about the research program or Manomet? Check out the following link: https://www.manomet.org/project/international-shorebird-survey/
