American oystercatcher

If you visit the coastline of the island regularly chances are great that you have encountered this bird along the rocky coast. And if not you might have encountered the effects of its strong bill on the surrounding snail shells. American oystercatchers can be found throughout the year and will also breed on the island. The birds mate for more than 1 season and will often make themselves known by sound before you can see them, calling loudly while flying. The birds search for sea snails, small sea stars, sea urchins, and other prey amongst the rocky shores of both the north and the south coast.
