On June 24th Curaçao had another first in bird spotting as visiting birder and bird expert Peter-Paul Schets discovered a Pied Lapwing at one of the birding hotspots on Curaçao. Quickly afterwards local birder Rob Wellens went to the area to take video and photos of the animal. This is the first ever record of this species for the island.

Pied lapwings

Pied lapwings are a South American species, normally found alongside sandy and muddy shores of rivers and lakes in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela. It was first considered to be part of the plover family (hence its other common name Pied plover) in the past and is now included in the family of lapwings.
Pied lapwings are not known to be migratory, but can move towards other locations when food is scarce.

The bird has been seen for 2 consecutive weeks starting June 24th at the birding hotspot of Blue Bay. Be aware that there are severe restrictions to visiting this area for birding as it is a private area with high risks due to golfing.
