Upland sandpiper

Upland sandpiper-350x280Of course every time we go birdwatching we hope to see a rare bird for Curacao, especially in the migration season. It doesn’t always happen but when it does…. man are we excited. This one was no exception, a rare visitor from North America with only 2 records for Curacao in the bird book*: the Upland Sandpiper (Bartrams Ruiter, Snepi Bartram).

A tall (30 cm) elegant bird to see, with long legs. We first noticed it because of its very distinctive walk, almost as if it was modeling on the runway. This together with its tall stance, yellow bill and pigeon-like head made the id easier.
